Opinion: There are things Southern Californians can do to help save monarch butterflies [Opinion]
” : Saúl Riatiga’s excellent commentary needs some comment. No matter how few monarchs reproduce in Baja California, they reproduce plentifully here in California.
The monarch population locally is decimated by the twin parasites of O.E. and the tachinid fly . The twin parasites kill or maim virtually all locally reproduced monarchs, as I know well from years of raising and monitoring them. Lastly, the tropical milkweed is friend, not enemy, to monarchs; it produces better toxins than do other milkweeds and does not “host” O.E. any more than do the others.
It simply needs to be cut back every winter whereas many other types die back. In my opinion, the greatest contribution that humanity could make to the monarchs would be to wage biological warfare against O.E. and tachinids.
