Opinion: The Ontario premier is as much a part of this election as the 102 people on the ballot. Voters should consider how each candidate will deal with that.
He looms over this Toronto election, casting a shadow on every promise and proclamation any candidate makes because Canadian provinces have an incredible power, financially and otherwise, over municipal matters.
After his government announced the dissolution of Peel Region last week, eventually eliminating the regional government overseeing Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, he said his phone was “ringing off the hook” from other mayors asking for their independence., “everyone wants to call their own shots and I don’t disagree with them,” and that “maybe it goes back to my roots on city council.
Though he’s an incredibly powerful premier of a province of nearly 15 million, Ford ran for mayor in 2014 and remains interested in Toronto in a way he isn’t with other municipalities. Many jokes have been made that Ford still wants to be mayor, but his behaviour suggests there’s something to that, as he can’t seem to resist the urge to meddle.
