Dave Feschuk: The Raptors find themselves under the big top as the trade circus warms up
HOUSTON—If the NBA trade deadline is less than a week away, then Fred VanVleet knows his phone is going to be busy.
“I’ve got parents and family members and brothers, so I hear stuff and I see stuff ,” VanVleet said. “I see everything that comes up. It comes to my phone. So I don’t have a choice.” Nurse said that, unlike VanVleet, he isn’t bombarded with messages from his inner circle about the moves team president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster may or may not make in the coming days.
“I think that’s the reality of it: There is business going on outside the games,” Nurse said. “We always put the next game and winning it at the forefront of our priorities, and winning in general. But there’s got to be a 1A there, where we’re trying to make sure we’re doing what’s best for these guys careerwise. So we’re talking with them about that as a subject. And then you’ve got to kind of put it aside.
Siakam, for his part, sounded disappointed that he won’t be headed to Salt Lake City for the league’s annual showcase event. But he made it clear that he didn’t blame the 30 NBA head coaches who voted to select seven reserves on the Eastern Conference squad for excluding him. He said his ultimate aim is to become a player whose all-star status is “not a debate.”
