Opinion: As Hérouxville shows, hearts and minds can change in the most unpredictable places, with time and a dose of economic reality.

With the holidays upon us we could all use some good news. So it’s a pleasure to pass along some very positive developments coming out of a rather unlikely place.

Cue the outrage. Hérouxville instantly became a byword for intolerance toward immigrants, especially of the Muslim persuasion. I was working in Montreal at the time and I can well recall the societywide debate set off by the town’s code of conduct and similar examples of hostility to outsiders. Its correspondent Norimitsu Onishi spoke to the town’s mayor, Bernard Thompson, and quoted him as saying: “We’ve had a break from our past. We now want as many immigrants as possible.”

A company that manufactures snowblowers in Hérouxville is recruiting immigrant workers from countries like Tunisia and Togo. And it’s not just one town. According to“The surrounding Mauricie region has launched itself into wooing immigrants. Villages have formed committees tasked with helping newcomers find everything from housing to halal food.”
