The UK's labour shortage is a more complex problem to solve than ever
The number of UK residents who were out of work due to long-term sickness recently reached another record high. With 2.5 million people having already been off due to illness, the figure increased by nearly half a million in the three months from April to June.
Some have suggested that the council's past issues around the collapse of Robin Hood Energy and the illegal spending of ring-fenced housing money may lie behind its inability to hire the staff it needs. But this is an argument that holds little water when placed in the context of local authorities across the country also facing acute staffing problems.
The TaxPayers' Alliance plonked itself in the middle of Worksop with a big sign warning residents that a "part-time council" was incoming. Such was the vitriol that the Leader of Bassetlaw District Council issued a statement over a recent weekend saying that he regretted having "said anything" about the four-day working week.
But although such criticism has forced Bassetlaw's leadership to totally disassociate itself from the four-day working week concept, it is a conversation that will not go away. In Cambridgeshire, a four-day working week trial remains ongoing despite a Government minister asking for it to be stopped. But is simply opposing ideas ever going to get us close to solving this country's workforce problems? More importantly, who is offering any alternative solutions?
