Opinion: The decision to spend Thanksgiving alone wasn't easy — but it made me happy [Opinion]
Over the past few years since the divorce, the members of my family would pretend everything was OK while simultaneously witnessing and perpetuating dysfunction year after year. It became exhausting. That’s why I made the decision this year to stay in Boston, where I moved after graduation.
When I graduated from San Diego State University six months ago, I became independent of my parents and unlocked a new level of liberation I had only got a taste of being away in college. As a Black woman, I recognize the significance of traditional family expectations and cultural norms, especially during this time of year. We thrive in community, so I’m not saying gathering isn’t important. What I’m saying is that setting boundaries with family is absolutely OK, and if the people closest to me are scattered across various time zones, it’s not like we can easily celebrate in an ideal way — much like last year.
