Major League Baseball’s trade market has been relatively stagnant so far and there seems to be an expectation that it will remain that way for at least a few more days. No surprise there, this is a sport where things typically go down to the wire.
The Blue Jays don’t seem close to completing any trades but, by early next week, the situation should be much different for a team that has every intention of making a deep run into the post-season. That inevitably causes delays elsewhere. The Chicago Cubs likely have to wait and see what happens with Soto before they move outfielder Ian Happ. The Cincinnati Reds and Oakland A’s, who are shopping starting pitchers Luis Castillo and Frankie Montas, want to see how many of the top prospects being offered for Soto become available to them.
Earlier this year, there was an expectation that the additions of two wild-card spots would lead to more buyers and fewer sellers at the deadline. To date, that hasn’t been the case, with the marketplace looking much like it did in previous years. The issue for the Jays is that even though there aren’t as many teams going for it as previously believed, the ones eyeing the post-season are shopping for the same thing: pitching. So, while there’s an expectation that prices will drop, there will still be sticker shock, just like there was last year when Atkins dealt a pair of his top prospects, Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson, for José Berríos.
