Opinion: Supporting renewable energy is a win-win for all Albertans yyc abpoli

Following Notley’s tenure, Jason Kenney’s government maintained our energy-only electricity market and continued with our strong industrial carbon pricing regime. This led to some of the leading companies in the world such as Amazon and Microsoft seeing the Alberta Advantage and buying renewable energy directly from Alberta-based projects, resulting in some of the largest technology sector investments in our province’s history.

Alberta’s renewable energy boom is demonstrating that there’s more to this province than oil and gas. Yes, we have a long, proud history in the oil and gas sector and as long as oil continues to be used in the world, I believe it should be Alberta oil. Our province’s industry is taking steps to decarbonize and our oil is among the most responsibly produced in the world.

Alberta’s economy is experiencing solid growth again because of strong energy prices. We’re seeing increased electrification across our economy in transportation, buildings and heavy industry, ultimately creating more demand for power — demand that renewable energy is ready to meet.
