The Star is taking a more open approach to requests to remove or edit articles on its website, recognizing the harm an article can have on an individual’s personal and professional life, writes public editor yowflier
“This article is destroying my life, my family life, my business and my reputation. All the charges against me were withdrawn even before the preliminary hearing. Can you kindly remove my name from the article?”
The Toronto Star gets between 120 and 150 requests a year from individuals seeking to have online news articles revised or removed completely. Most relate to articles about criminal charges that were withdrawn. With those considerations in mind, journalists and editors at the Star along with the company’s regional dailies and community papers have drafted a new approach to handle requests to remove editorial content published online.
