Opinion: The weekend's abject failure will cost almost all the goodwill the men's program has created. But it also points to another major Canadian sports group that needs to look seriously at its leadership, writes SmithRaps
The thing about the absolute tire fire of a weekend that Canada Soccer has just come through that absolutely stuns me is how entirely preventable it could have been.
It’s funny, isn’t it? Or sad might be a more appropriate description but maybe not all that surprising when you step back and look at sports leadership across this country. It kind of feels like across the board, the very top levels of sports management are collectively unable to handle the jobs they have. It's not all, of course, and I don't want to paint this problem with too broad a brush but it seems to me there are far, far, far, far too many sports organizations that have been, or are, in crises. That's scary.
But how in the world there was no agreement with the players over something as basic as remuneration for the coming World Cup and preparation games long before this weekend is almost impossible to comprehend. Now, some of the responsibility for that has to be shared by the players if they didn’t immediately start thinking about how they would like to see the money dispersed and what percentage they should get that they should get. If they did, that’s foresight; if they didn’t, that’s selling themselves short.
And it’ll be a big mess for the next group of Canada Soccer executives to deal with because this group has to go.Good time Saturday out in Scarborough catching the opening night for the Shooting Stars and catching up with some old friends.
