Opinion: Slow handling of alleged SDSU gang rape makes it clear why sexual assault is underreported [Opinion]

Their slow response could be discouraging to others and keep them from coming forward at SDSU, and to SDPD.

Meanwhile, SDSU officials stand by their decision to defer to a request from San Diego police to keep quiet on the allegations and not investigate them on their own for nine months to allow SDPD to let its investigation proceed without being compromised.
In response, a university email to an editorial writer Friday disputed the idea that SDSU had a passive reaction to the case, noting in particular mandatory sexual violence prevention and consent training given to male athletes in late November. But key details undercut the university’s claim to have a by-the-book response in dealing with this matter.
Of course, accused individuals deserve due process, and understanding of the case may shift as more details emerge. But at this point, the initial response so many had to this case — that the system failed a brutalized minor — has only grown stronger. That system includes SDPD and SDSU.
