Opinion: SickKids doctors say a simpler tax system is needed to help the needy. To improve the lives of children and their caregivers, we urgently need a simpler tax and tax benefit system that is accessible and feasible.

In the last year, you have read many pleas from pediatricians — please vaccinate your children against COVID-19, please do not make your own baby formula, please restock over-the-counter pain relievers for children again — but this new plea may be a surprise.

However, when we brought the CVITP program to SickKids it was not successful. Self-employed caregivers and those who did not meet the strict income criteria were not eligible to participate in the CVITP. The CVITP criteria also left out many caregivers who were trying to make ends meet by working part time driving or delivering food for app platforms.

Children with additional complex medical needs may also be eligible to receive other benefits, such as the Child Disability Benefit, the Disability Tax Credit, Assistance of Children with Severe Disabilities Program and a Registered Disability Savings Plan; however a caregiver needs to apply specifically for those benefits.
