Opinion: Preserve the spirit of democracy, in Ukraine and around the world If it seems you are just one person on this big planet, that you don’t really influence anything, let me reassure you: you matter to us in Ukraine.
. The reaction of western countries was largely to express concern. In my opinion, this is exactly what gave the enemy the courage to repeat the occupation attempt in 2022: Russia was sure that the countries of the world would be simply worried again.
On the eve of this new war, European politicians were sure that Ukraine would fall in the first week. They offeredthe opportunity to leave the country and save his family. The world political order did not need this conflict. Those same world leaders were shocked at how the Ukrainian people defended their land. We were ready to fight to the last drop of blood for our independence. The smartest forecasters gave us a maximum of three months. I remember a time when our media was dominated by the idea that the world had abandoned us — that everyone was just “deeply concerned” again. All Ukrainians felt as in mourning. We were ready to say goodbye to our country.
Then it started: mass demonstrations of ordinary people in support of Ukraine began throughout the democratic world. Millions of people came to the central squares of their cities with Ukrainian flags. We watched it here on TV with such joy and gratitude, as your politicians accepted the will of their citizens and turned their faces to Ukraine. At that moment I realized the power of western democracy.
I understand the world is tired of our war. I often hear stories from people that there is too much negativity and bad news, that this topic is losing its relevance in global media, that Ukrainian refugees cause so much trouble. I understand you perfectly.

A Christmas season without its traditional glow in UkraineJust a year ago, Sophia Square in Kyiv was all about the big Christmas tree and thousands of lights spreading over the plaza. These final days of 2022, in the middle of a war that has ravaged the country for 10 months, a more modest tree stands there, its blue and yellow lights barely breaking the gloom of the square that is otherwise dark apart from the headlights of cars.
