Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle, left, and Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, shown here in July 2021, have left it unclear whether either would show up for Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting to approve the property tax rate. State law requires a quorum of at least four members to set a tax rate.Editorial: Will 1,000 officers make Harris County safer? Mealer and Hidalgo spar on crime.

” : Sunday’s editorial does an admirable job of laying out the candidates’ positions and the facts concerning public safety spending in Harris County. It seems, however, to naively ignore the role of politics when it states, “Somehow a narrative of ‘defunding the police’ is taking hold” in our county. Somehow? Really?

The political narrative of “defunding the police” is used without regard to its accuracy simply to scare voters into voting against Democrats and for Republicans. I noticed he didn’t say the Inflation Reduction Act itself was the failure, only the celebration.
