Opinion: As he cozies up to extremists, Pierre Poilievre is potentially leading us down the same dark and nasty road that Trump has taken Americans, all in a sleazy bid to attain power — and at almost any price.

Back in 2016 when she was running for the U.S. presidency, Hillary Clinton made a shocking — and unwise — comment about “deplorables” who were among Donald Trump’s supporters.

In Canada, a similar “basket of deplorables” is clearly putting its faith in Pierre Poilievre, who is expected to easily win the Conservative Party leadership race when results are announced on Saturday. In recent weeks, my email box has been flooded by people claiming to be Poilievre supporters who hold little back when it comes to expressing views that would put them in Clinton’s “deplorables” mob.“Canada is in the grips of fascism” led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, writes a person named Helena. “It is being brought about thru massive illegal immigration of mostly Islamic people, who have no wish to integrate into a Christian Canada.

“I can’t even turn on the TV to watch a recently made movie or tv show without being bombarded with negative depictions of white males,” writes one man.But Bernie Farber, chair of the Canadian AntiHate Network, which studies radical movements, recently told the news outletthat it “wouldn’t at all surprise me if they believe that Poilievre embraces their views, or at least embraces some of their views.

In 2016, Clinton apologized within a day of making her comment about Trump’s “deplorables.” That didn’t stop her, though, from continuing to attack Trump’s racism and thinly veiled appeals to bigoted white males.
