This city has become punishingly expensive to live in, which makes things hard enough for many people, and these many acts of civic negligence and neglect pile daily insult atop that injury. Toronto, can’t we do better? Opinion by thekeenanwire
There’s a labyrinth installation in the little Trinity Square Park tucked behind the Eaton Centre — a winding path to “quiet the mind,” in the heart of Toronto’s hustle and bustle.
By the end of the month, the labyrinth hole had been patched with asphalt — a temporary, unsightly Band-Aid, for sure, but at least one that eliminates the immediate tripping hazard. It feels, at this point, like we ought to be grateful for that.recently tweeted to me Oh yeah, those garbage bins, generally overflowing but often also hanging wide open, their locks and latches broken, their contents spilling out into the street. Or those lamp posts — one of which was recently installed, apparently on purpose. Or the washrooms in public parks: three times in September, I attended weekday evening youth baseball games in Etobicoke, and all three times I found the public washrooms locked.
This isn’t to dump on the city: as Campbell noted in his tweet to me, Toronto remains strikingly “vibrant and alive” coming out of the pandemic. Having recently returned to Toronto after a three-year absence, I’ve been energized by the hustle of my hometown, newly appreciative of just how much we get right.
