Opinion: Opposing viewpoints on Chula Vista's plan for a university district [Opinion]
‘A monumental step forward:’ Governor clears path for Chula Vista’s university district
” : We must all be grateful for the opportunities that Gov. Gavin Newsom and Assemblyman David David Alvarez and Sen. Steve Padilla have provided for the citizens and future college graduates of Chula Vista. These three heroes have given the some 20,000 students who will attend this university the same opportunities that all the other students in San Diego County have. This new legislation now allows this university to be build instead of selling land to developers. There will also be tremendous economic benefits to other citizens. We don’t often get the opportunity to congratulate our officials and we should celebrate them.
In order to make a dent in the housing crisis, and staunch the rise in homelessness, affordable housing creation has to significantly outpace job creation, population growth and the construction of schools and universities, specifically in and around population centers, such as Chula Vista. The city has every right to create good-paying jobs and post-secondary education opportunities for its residents, but that must be matched and exceeded by serious, timely investment in affordable housing. Anything else just adds more strain to a housing market that is already in crisis, that is already outrageously unaffordable, that is already pushing more and more people into housing insecurity and homelessness.
