The trap-neuter-vaccinate-return program is the most humane and cost-effective approach.
When baseball season officially opened at the Oakland Coliseum this year, kitten season was already in full swing there.
One of the most striking differences I’ve seen between shelters with high save rates like Oakland Animal Services and others, is in how they handle so-called “stray” cats, many of whom are actually community cats, outdoor cats cared for by residents. In many California shelters, these cats make up more than half of the cats coming in the front door.
The concept is quite simple. Cats are humanely trapped, evaluated by veterinarians, vaccinated for rabies and other deadly feline viruses, sterilized and returned to their original outdoor homes, healthy and no longer able to reproduce.
