Gregor Chisholm: Mariners here to remind Jays of wild-card series that led to wild winter
did more than bring an abrupt end to their year. It ushered in an off-season of change.
In some ways, the Mariners were responsible for breaking up the band and, on Friday, they return to the scene of the crime, brining along an old friend:. The wild-card series last year adds undeniable intrigue to the current one, as does the wave of change that followed, with Hernández and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. pushed out in favour of Kevin Kiermaier and Daulton Varsho.
The Mariners aren’t the same team either and, at least temporarily, that’s not a good thing. Front-line starter Robbie Ray made just one appearance this year before he was lost for the season with a flexor injury. Adam Frazier, who hit the game-winning double in Game 2, left town, as did Blue Jays killer Carlos Santana and outfielder Mitch Haniger.
Both players figure to factor into this upcoming series. The Jays are looking to extend their current four-game winning streak while the 11-14 Mariners are still trying to find themselves after a slow start.
