Dave Feschuk: LeBron James on verge of being crowned NBA’s points king — just as he’s about to pass Steve Nash for assists

Which, in a lot of ways, will put the 38-year-old James in the spotlight for a statistical accomplishment he says he’s never prioritized.

As amazing as it is that James is about to eclipse Abdul-Jabbar, you can make the case it’s more impressive that he’s even closer to moving past Mark Jackson and Steve Nash for fourth placeJames needs eight assists to better Jackson and nine to pass Nash. When James clears those hurdles, only the trio of John Stockton, Jason Kidd and Chris Paul will have dished out more assists in their respective careers.

“He reminds me a lot of Magic Johnson,’’ Tom Konchalski, the late legendary talent scout, said at the time. “He sees the game two passes ahead and he makes an average team into a great one. He’s not as good a shooter as Kobe was, but he’s a much better passer.’’ There’ve been times, of course, when James has been criticized for too often deferring to teammates in big moments: “I’m a very unselfish player, sometimes too unselfish,’’ James said himself back in 2006. And if there’ve been moments when that’s been true, it’s difficult to critique James’s career batting average for making the correct play. James has been the basketball mega-brain behind four NBA championships and 10 trips to the NBA Finals.
