Leafs mailbag: Why fans may get a healthy dose of Matt Murray down the stretch
Murray has had moments when he looked like the Murray that won two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh. But he’s had a few too many moments when he looked like the guy that struggled in Ottawa. When he makes a big save, it feels like more of a surprise.That may not be how Keefe and the Leafs management team sees it. The club has more invested in Murray — he has one year left on his contract — than Samsonov – an RFA at the end of the year.
And so Murray is going to get some more long looks, even if that means a collective holding of breath by fans on some nights.will be interesting. Does he go to Murray against a weaker opponent that nonetheless embarrassed him in the season opener? Or does he stick with the hot hand in Samsonov? Keefe has so far avoided any notion of a goaltending controversy by dividing the workload. Heck, fans were simply happy if one of the goalies was healthy.
Since both returned to health, neither one has dominated the starts in net. Neither has started more than two in a row. If Samsonov gets the nod Saturday it will be his second straight start and third straight appearance. So the long, drawn out competition to start the playoffs will continue.
