We’ve got to build tens of thousands more apartments for San Diegans who subsist on jobs that pay $20 per hour (or less).
: Building thousands of studio apartments that rent for $2,500 and one-bedrooms that rent for $3,000 will never solve our affordable housing crisis.
Setting aside just five of Parkline’s 94 units for very low or low-income renters is a woefully inadequate response to our lack of truly affordable units. For-profit developers and their investors can’t be faulted for maximizing their profit by charging an additional $150 per month for a parking spot .But if we really want to ease our affordability crisis, we’ve got to build tens of thousands more apartments for San Diegans who subsist on jobs that pay $20 per hour , Social Security or disability.
Public/nonprofit partnerships and building on public property are one solution, but our mayor and City Council have failed to make that strategy a priority.Any resident choosing to live in a building without parking should be required to sign a statement saying that they will not have a car. Anything less is short-sighted, grossly unfair to the neighborhood, and will diminish the area’s quality of life forever.
