Chantal Hébert: Justin Trudeau is failing a test of leadership

MONTREAL—If the debate over Chinese interference in Canada’s politics is a test of leadership, both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre are going out of their way to fail it.

But that time came and went before Trudeau belatedly corrected course and told the country he was looking for such a person. Given all that, it is possible to believe — as I do — both that Johnston will not factor in potential political damage to the prime minister in his determination as to the way forward, and that the process amounts to an abdication of leadership on Trudeau’s part.

Turning to Poilievre, the ease with which the Conservative leader has opted for character assassination at the expense of making a reasoned case for a public inquiry is unsurprising, given the shabby way he treated former Quebec premier Jean Charest over the course of his leadership campaign.
