Steward: Jean Charest gives angry Alberta Conservatives what they want — but they aren’t biting via StCatStandard
Last week, Conservative leadership candidate Jean Charest came to the Calgary Stampede bearing promises that should satisfy Albertans demanding more power and recognition for their province.
If elected party leader and then prime minister, Charest promised that 30 days after he is sworn in he would meet with the Alberta premier so they can come up with a political agenda that suits Alberta; what he refers to as. Six months later he would meet with all the provincial premiers and territorial leaders to draft an agenda for the whole country
Charest also said that if Alberta wants more powers a la Quebec it should have them. Alberta could manage its share of the Canada Pension Plan, have its own police force, and choose the immigrants that it wants based on its labour and entrepreneurial needs, just as Quebec does.
