Gregor Chisholm: Jays GM Ross Atkins says he doesn’t need to trade a catcher, but the odds are he will
LAS VEGAS—The Blue Jays have been exploring trades involving their young catchers for the last couple of years. This is the off-season when a deal should finally come to fruition.
A deal involving Kirk or Moreno is one the Jays need to get right. After graduating a slew of prospects over the last few years, their minor-league system isn’t what it used to be. There’s a void in potential impact players, especially in the upper levels, which limits the organization’s flexibility to make big moves.
Moreno’s trajectory is more difficult to predict because he’s spent a limited amount of time in the majors. The 22-year-old hit .319 across parts of 25 games for and held his own behind the plate despite having to learn a new pitching staff on the fly. He has been a highly touted prospect for several years now, but if there’s a red flag it can be found in Moreno’s lack of power. He finished 2022 with four homers between Triple-A Buffalo and Toronto.
There’s also a scenario in which the Jays don’t deal any of their catchers. Moreno has appeared in a handful of minor-league games at first, second and third base. He’s also made one start in left and has spent a big of time working out in centre. That versatility, Atkins insists, would allow the Jays to carry all three on the roster at the same time.
