If you are not worried about Ontario’s nursing crisis, you are simply not paying attention. Bill 124 continues to challenge Ontario’s nurses. Their loss threatens our entire health-care system. Opinion by Enxhi Kondi
Last week, Statistics Canada and the Bank of Canada reported troubling data that is substantially — yet inconspicuously — affecting Ontario’s health-care system. Statistics Canada reported that, amid nationally increasing job vacancies, vacancies in the health-care sector are at record highs, withThis same profession received at most a one per cent pay increase this past year, a cap imposed by the.
Each of these are present-day consequences of decades of political and economic decisions, exacerbated by a pandemic that is not quite over as far as health-care workers are concerned. Our health-care system is intrinsically interdependent with the nursing profession, as nurses account for the single largest group of health-care workers. If nurses are suffering, it is a mirror to the suffering of our health-care system as a whole — there cannot be good health care without a strong nursing base.
Bill 124 was irrational when it was first introduced, and continues to prove itself so. Despite an allocated bonus this year — which most nurses have still not received — the right to negotiate wages is also about the dignity and respect of the nursing profession, and is not equatable to a one-time payoff.
