The other shoe finally dropped — or is dropping at Hockey Canada. The national sports governing body has announced that their embattled CEO, Scott Smith, has resigned along with the entire board of directors.
What started as a crisis involving the organization’s payments to settle the lawsuits, has morphed into a full-scale investigation into how the board and management had hidden information and obstructed inquiries into their actions. They had presented the whole sorry mess as a microcosm of what is taking place in our society. They continued to point blame elsewhere instead of at their own actions.
In Canada, a board of directors has a fiduciary responsibility to do what is best for the organization. Why Hockey Canada’s board did not act sooner may have more to do with their status as “volunteer” directors as compared to corporate directors who are paid, in some cases, quite handsomely for their work.
While still at a disadvantage, corporate boards do spend more time with management, and they are more accountable primarily due to the fact they are being paid. Volunteer directors, as is the case with Hockey Canada, are more difficult to find and their organizations are more lenient in their expectations as a result.
