Opinion: In “Above the Fold,” John Honderich states repeatedly that he’d come to terms with his distant, cold father; that he’d made peace with a man of stony character and self-made values.
Because the late Toronto Star proprietor, publisher, chairman of the board, et cetera was too often surrounded by rats. A great many of them double-crossed him, in Torstar’s corporate office, within the five ownership families, among directors and the legacy board of trustees and, down in the newsroom, senior editors he had a strong hand in appointing.
But the greatest betrayal of all was by his own father and predecessor, Beland Honderich. The towering, intimidating figure who voted against his son at critical accession junctures or gave not a whit of meaningful support. And it is this complicated relationship that seeps out from the pages of John’s posthumously published memoirs, “Above the Fold: A Personal History of the Toronto Star.” Even as the author struggles valiantly to both illuminate and obscure.
When I last saw John, had dinner with him just before leaving for the Beijing Olympics, he was in an upbeat mood, thrilled to have delivered his manuscript, eagerly looking forward to how it would be received by the publisher, the editing process, the publicity tour beyond. At age 75, his life had been mostly sorted out, the future of the paper he’d sold in trustworthy hands, he believed, advising the new owners as a consigliere while delighting in his role as a grandfather.
While crusty Ray Timson — three times our managing editor — could scare the bejeezus out of reporters when he wagged his long index finger in your face, with Mr. Honderich we’d simply slide further down in our chairs, hiding behind Underwood typewriters and hope he never made eye contact.
