Once again, straight party voters threw out qualified judges. We need dramatic...
, straight party ticket voters defeated judges who were universally acclaimed for their intelligence and fairness, and elected a handful of utterly unqualified candidates. It’s clear that voters are not relying on reliable information about a candidate’s qualification but are voting primarily along party lines.
Party affiliation was the real driving force for at least 97 percent of the votes cast in the judicial elections in Harris County. Party affiliation does provide valuable information to voters in legislative and executive races, as voters justifiably care about which party controls legislative and executive branches.
Ask any experienced trial lawyer — there is a very wide spread in the talent and performance between our “best” and “worst” Harris County judges. The Republican candidates, incumbents and challengers also received about the same number of votes, around 49 percent.
