Doug Ford’s health care reform focuses on the wrong issues. More diagnostic imaging will not solve the emergency room crisis. Nor will it create more long-term care facilities. Opinion by Thomas Walkom
Until now, attention to Ford’s reforms has focused on privatization. Does it matter that the new clinics will be privately owned, for-profit entities? I think it does matter and that the clinics would do better if they were publicly owned and not for profit.
There is also the question of legitimate medicare fees. Will private clinics be paid the going OHIP rate? Or will they get more? Will the new clinics be allowed to poach staff working in existing public hospitals?A few years ago, the Star sent me to Australia to look at that country’s medicare system. There were many differences but one that stood out was that unlike Canada. Australia allowed unlimited private medicine.
It was not uncommon to see a public patient sign up privately — with the same doctor — just to avoid medicare wait lines.
