Opinion: Don’t pine for spring, embrace the benefits of winter. Hunkering down inside during the winter keeps us from experiencing the mental, physical, and social health benefits of spending time outdoors.

Really, Canada? More than 6-in-10 of us want to skip over winter and jump right into spring? You’d think our nation would come together to embrace the weather as a matter of Canadian pride.tell us otherwise. Narrative Research reports fewer than 40 per cent of Canadians say “bring on the snow!” Well, like it or not, winter is here. We can’t beat it, so let’s join it.

First, getting outside during the winter improves our mood. Reduced daylight hours mean we need to maximize our exposure to natural light to prevent the winter blues, a serious threat to our mental state. Moreover, exposure to nature, even a modest amount, reduces depression, mitigates stress and anxiety, and increases happiness. In other words, don’t worry . Be happy .

Third, no season is more isolating than winter. We interact with fewer people when we remain indoors. Evidence shows loneliness predisposes us to premature mortality and serious morbidity, thereby resulting in negative health outcomes comparable to poor lifestyle habits, environmental threats, and clinical risk factors.

Despite these important health benefits, the cold can still be a discouraging factor. Nobody craves frigid temperatures. Nevertheless, wearing appropriate clothing keeps us warm enough to withstand the elements. Bottom line: there’s no excuse.
