This doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in our government’s competence among those in areas just beginning their own disruptive subway-construction odyssey. Such as those in Scarborough. Or those who live or work downtown, wherefour years — to allow for the construction of the Ontario Line subway. Streetcar lines are being rerouted, and an army of cops is being deployed to deal with the anticipated car-traffic gridlock.

You could say that this is the price of overdue progress. But the agencies managing construction haven’t exactly earned the benefit of the doubt that they can or will minimize disruption. We used to know how. Construction on the original Yonge line, from Eglinton to Union, took less than five years. Construction of the University segment to St. George took four years. The Spadina line extension north to Wilson took five years to build. Transit researcherthat construction of the original Yonge line only closed the street downtown for three months before reopening with temporary streetcar tracks in place.
