But he also exhorted the able-bodied, and closed-minded, to open their eyes.
Amid the wooden pews and the steel-rimmed wheelchairs, the church was packed with the most influential dignitaries, but also the most inspirational disabled friends. On this day of mourning, as indeed throughout his life, the late Onley brought people together — breaking down not just physical but spiritual barriers.
Holmes has lately come to depend on the scooter — on loan from Onley — after recovering from foot surgery last year. As the minister motored to the head of a solemn procession of pallbearers, he served as a reminder that all nondisabled people can one day find themselves with a disability or infirmity — short-lived, lifelong or end-of-life.
