The contest to replace Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is becoming a race to the bottom. It’s one that could damage Alberta’s relations with the rest of the country — if it doesn’t spark a full-blown constitutional crisis. Opinion by gthomsonink

The contest to replace Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is becoming a race to the bottom.

Smith is promising to introduce an Alberta Sovereignty Act that she says would allow her to nullify federal laws and rules she doesn’t like when she becomes premier.Several of her competitors are scrambling to do the same — with similar tactics. She is whipping up anger at all kinds of perceived enemies, whether that be Alberta Health Services for pandemic-related mandates or Justin Trudeau’s price on carbon. In her highly partisan and flawed narrative, Quebec-loving Trudeau has killed every pipeline deal while doing his best to strangle Alberta’s oilsands industry.
