Opinion: 1M species are at risk of extinction, and the systems they rely on are being pushed to the brink. Some regions are reaching a point at which the ecosystem can no longer cope, and collapses. COP15 can be a turning point for nature — and for us.

As host country of this decade-defining conference, Canada has a unique responsibility to set the stage on what can be achieved. That starts by getting our own house in order.makes the case for a Nature and Biodiversity Act as some first steps. This new legislation would outline how Canada will meet its 2030 targets and require transparent progress reports. It would recognize that we are living on stolen Indigenous land and fundamentally decolonize our approach to protecting nature.

Seven in 10 Canadians support such a law, and more than eight in 10 believe Canada has a special responsibility as host country to set an example at COP15, according to
