Opinion: Chula Vista's use of automated license plate surveillance threatens everyone's privacy [Opinion]

The surveillance program used automated license plate recognition, which equips police cars with camera systems that scan every license plate they pass and collect data on each vehicle. That data includes license plate information and a date, time, location and a photo of the vehicle and sometimes driver and passengers. Officers are alerted if the system gets a “hit,” matching a license plate to “hot lists” of vehicles related to investigations.
