Dave Feschuk: Canada’s Adam Svensson takes major step onto Masters stage
AUGUSTA, Ga.—It tells you something that Adam Svensson, one of four Canadians in the field at theSvensson keeps perhaps the lowest profile among his compatriots vying for the green jacket. During a week in which Mike Weir, at age 52, will mark the 20th anniversary of his win at the 2003 Masters by playing in the tournament for the 24th time, Canada will also be represented by Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes.
Given the bulging winner’s purses on the PGA Tour, Svensson has plenty to take. And though it’s taken a while for Svensson to cement his status as a pro, there are those who’ve seen it coming far longer. Pro success didn’t come immediately. Though Svensson secured his PGA Tour card for the first time in 2018, only a few years after he turned pro, he lost his card after a nondescript season in 2019. And when he returned to the Korn Ferry Tour after a pandemic-induced delay in 2020 and promptly missed a pair of cuts, his coach at Barry, Jimmy Stobs, who’d caddied for Svensson at those tournaments, suggested it was time for a reassessment of Svensson’s path.
“I realized there are a thousand Adam Svenssons out there, all of them as good as I am,” Svensson said.
