Building transit shouldn’t be dependent on one localized issue. Trees can always be planted but building transit takes time. Tough decisions are not meant to be easy but someone needs to make them for our collective good. Opinion by Sharan Kaur
I like to think of myself as a reasonable and rational Torontonian — a centrist in all ways. An urban planner by training, I ran far away from the profession in my younger years to save myself the disappointment that comes with trying to plan and build a livable city in a climate full of nimbyism and irrational politics.
The constant gridlock in midtown Toronto has left the community at a disadvantage but all for a long-term gain, an improved transit system that will serve nearly two million people a day. The outrage from progressives has been confusing; the same vocal opponents who are dead against the tree removal are the same vocal supporters of enhanced and improved public transit. And yet have all been silent while some 61 trees were removed in the nearby community of Moss Park for the exact same project.
