Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays win a series finally, but there’s still reason for worry
finally have some positive vibes to focus on following a series victory over the Minnesota Twins but, if the last three games were any indication, this group still has a lot of cleaning up to do.
Yet this three-game set wasn't nearly the positive it might appear. The good — another sensational series from the red-hot, strong starting efforts from Berríos and Kevin Gausman, and a solid stretch from the bullpen — couldn’t cover up the mental and physical mistakes that contending teams can't afford to have.
The series finale featured more of the same. Springer opened the games with a single, then got caught trying to steal second. The effort can't be questioned but with Bichette, the Jays' hottest hitter, at the plate the logic certainly can. The only reason the Twins are in first place is because they play in the AL Central, where every other team is below .500. In the East, their 27-26 record would rank last. This series felt more about the Twins’ shortcomings than it did about the Jays' showcasing their strengths.
