Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays still have a hole to fill in their outfield

are shaping up to be one of the best teams in the American League in 2023 but, with camps set to open in just over a week, their off-season shopping isn’t done quite yet.

On the surface, the job of a fourth outfielder might not seem that crucial. He’s often viewed as little more than a fill-in or a platoon partner for a vastly superior player, and he is expected to act as a defensive specialist or as speed off the bench. Another reason the Jays should be targeting a fourth outfielder is to get the best of matchups. Varsho has a .781 on-base-plus-slugging percentage against right-handers across parts of three seasons and a well-below-average .615 against left-handers. Kiermaier has a .735 career OPS against righties and a .661 mark against lefties.

The Jays figure to be shopping a tier or two down, where Robbie Grossman, former Jay Jonathan Davis and Franmil Reyes are available. If they don’t mind adding another left-handed bat, the list could be expanded to include David Peralta, Kole Calhoun, Tyler Naquin and Odubel Herrera.
