Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman not balking at crackdown, will adjust his delivery
DUNEDIN, Fla.—It’s going to be a springtime of adjustments for Kevin Gausman following Major League Baseball’s recent announcement that umpires have been tasked with stricter enforcement of balk rules.
When Gausman moves into the stretch, he lifts his left heel and taps it on the ground several times before beginning his leg kick. Those taps will no longer be permitted as the first movement is deemed to be the start of his delivery. MLB officials believe tactics like the one Gausman uses on the mound will cause confusion to its clock operators. Should the clock stop on Gausman’s first tap of his heel? His second? Third? It’s a moot point because, according to the balk rule, Gausman’s delivery is a no go.
Gausman has yet to switch things up because he didn’t want to make any wide-scale changes during his initial buildup in camp. While throwing a bullpen session Thursday at the Jays’ spring training complex, Gausman was still tapping his heel a few times before each pitch. Once Gausman gets the heel tap under control, his focus will shift to the upcoming year. The 32-year-old is coming off a successful first season with the Jays after he went 12-10 with a 3.35 ERA across 31 starts. The veteran hurler wasn’t completely satisfied with his year, though. He was thrilled with how he began the year, with a 2.87 ERA in his first 17 starts. It’s the 3.90 ERA he put up during the second half, a trend he experienced earlier in his career as well, that left him wanting more.
