Several on City Council want horse-drawn carriages banned from San Antonio, while others simply want the business moved out of downtown.
Horse carriage companies and their drivers turned out in force Wednesday as a City Council committee took up a controversial proposal to ban carriages from downtown streets. A final decision on the tourist-driven trade could be months off — but it’s clear the industry is preparing for a fight.
“I’m sorry but I can’t be a City Council person that in good faith says, ‘You know what, let’s just keeping doing it the way we’ve always done,’ and risk viral videos of horses dropping dead downtown,” he said, referring to a July 2022 news story about a New York City carriage horse that collapsed in Central Park during a heat wave. Peláez named several U.S. cities that have outlawed horse-drawn carriages, including Chicago, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Palm Beach, Florida.
