More bad news for American retail: openingceremony will close all its stores over the coming year.
will close all its stores over the coming year. The closures of its New York, Los Angeles, and Japan stores followed the sale of Opening Ceremony to New Guards Group, a conglomerate that owns Off-White, Heron Preston, and other streetwear brands. The news of the store closures was announced in a series of Instagram posts written by founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon.
“It’s incredibly emotional for us to announce today that we will be closing our Opening Ceremony retail locations sometime in 2020,” the pair wrote. “We’ve made a decision to focus on growing Opening Ceremony collection and brand with our new partners, New Guards Group, and expand the designs of Opening Ceremony. Our brand takes the beautiful spirit of experimentation, fun, and collaboration embodied in our stores and imbues this energy into the clothing we make.
The letter goes on to explain that Opening Ceremony will continue to exist as a single brand—not as a retailer. “We are stepping back from multi-brand retail, for a moment, so we can come back with an experience that is just as inspiring, filled with love and relevant for the years ahead as Opening Ceremony has been,” Lim and Leon wrote.
As a store, Opening Ceremony carried brands big and small, from Dries Van Noten and Acne Studios to Eckhaus Latta and Y/Project. Since its inception in 2002, the store operated as a hub for the new, the offbeat, and the weird. Its Howard Street outpost was a place to shop for $15,000 Rodarte dresses and to discover handmade candlesticks imported from Mexico. The fate of O.C.
