Paul and Mia Scott were killed when a cigarette end discarded in their open fire sparked a massive blaze at their home
Homeowners with an open fire are being urged to get their chimney swept regularly after a devastating house blaze killed a dad and his young daughter.
READ MORE:Dad and daughter died in huge house fire caused by cigarette as heroic neighbours tried to save them The deaths of Paul and Mia, which the coroner ruled were accidental, serve as a stark reminder of the need to ensure open fires are working properly. Eye-witness accounts, read out during the inquest, described the ferocious flames and billowing smoke which engulfed their home in a matter of minutes.
Amid the ongoing cost of living crisis and fuel poverty, buoyed by rising energy prices, many home-owners are turning to coal and wood burners to heat their homes. But the need to have your chimney swept regularly is something not everyone is aware of. "To help keep you and your family safe from fire, we are asking you to take necessary steps such as ensuring your chimney is swept regularly and that chimneys and flues are well maintained. We also recommend that people always use a fireguard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers, make sure the embers are properly put out before going to bed and I would urge all householders to have a working smoke alarm in their home.
