OP-ED: Ethiopian crash: The Fourth Industrial Revolution and aircraft safety By Tshilidzi Marwala

In one of the deadliest aviation accidents in recent times, the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed a fortnight ago — just eight minutes after taking off, killing all 157 people on board.

China was the first country to ground this aircraft, less than 24 hours after the crash. It was followed by others, such as the European Union, Canada, Japan and South Africa. What is interesting is that the US did not rush to ban flying this aircraft. Boeing, the aircraft’s manufacturer, is an American company closely linked to the political establishment of the US. In 2018, Boeing allegedly spent $15-million on political lobbying.

If a pilot wants to climb to an altitude of 800m above sea level, the system will make this happen by determining the speed, pitch, roll and yaw configuration schedules. Therefore, for the objective of reaching an altitude of 800m, the system requires information such as the present altitude, speed, pitch and so on. This is because the aircraft cannot climb to a particular altitude unless it knows its present altitude.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is driven by intelligent technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. Thus, controllers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution are intelligent, and this makes automated systems intelligent. However, because of this infusion of intelligence into these controllers, these systems are vulnerable to stability problems.

OP-ED: National Savings Capture: Predatory capitalism and the asset management industryOP-ED: National Savings Capture: Predatory capitalism and the asset management industryWe have found ourselves in the eye of a perfect storm. In pursuit of self-interest, our political leaders have failed us badly, and by so doing have tarnished the reputation of the country as a safe and sound investment destination. The corporate sector has registered phenomenal failures, hundreds of billions have been wiped off the capital markets. The nation’s savings have been looted in the public and private sector to the order of hundreds of billions. So, it is hardly surprising that so much distrust and suspicion of the establishment has emerged.

OP-ED: Reflecting on A More Perfect UnionOP-ED: Reflecting on A More Perfect UnionEleven years ago, Barack Obama gave his ‘A More Perfect Union’ speech at the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was delivered in response to the racialisation of his presidential campaign in 2008. With an increasingly polarised political landscape in the United States, it’s worth revisiting this seminal speech about race and nationhood.

OP-ED: US: Understanding the Fed’s dovish turnOP-ED: US: Understanding the Fed’s dovish turnWhile the US Federal Reserve is most likely to remain in a holding pattern for the bulk of 2019, another rate hike toward the end of the year or in 2020 cannot be ruled out. China’s growth slowdown seems to be bottoming out and a deal to avert an economically disastrous “hard Brexit” could still be in the offing, and it is possible that the eurozone’s slowdown — especially Germany’s — will prove temporary.

OP-ED: Reforming like an Egyptian – a question of incentives?OP-ED: Reforming like an Egyptian – a question of incentives? The return of the generals in Egypt indicates that, at least for the Egyptian elite, radicalism was not an option. And muddling through was not either, explaining a subsequent set of bold economic reforms. The difference it seems between El-Sisi and (former leader Hosni) Mubarak is that the military now realises that ‘they will live and die by the success or failure of the economy’.
