OP-ED: Corrective measures needed for the boiler and mill problems at Medupi and Kusile By Alex Ham

My particular field of expertise was in the design of pulverised coal boilers. It was our bad experience with the boilers at Kriel that motivated me to make an in-depth study of South Africa’s coal.

I presented a similar paper at an international conference at the VGB International Power Station Conference in 1992 in Germany, which is now available in German and Japanese. The boiler contractor for Medupi and Kusile only had previous experience with coals in Australia and Japan, but never with South African coals.

The source of the problem is the coal pulveriser mills not being able to produce the more stringent fineness required. This results in coal/char particles burning higher up in the furnace, causing excessive reheater temperatures, and so on.

To understand this, you would need much more than that which can be quantified or explained rationally. It requires a leap of faith, with a firm grip on problems that beset the country, the region, the global political economy — and a deep well of power to beat the resistance to progressive change.

OP-ED: The false choice between reburials and justice for the Gukurahundi victimsOP-ED: The false choice between reburials and justice for the Gukurahundi victimsThe promise by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa that victims of the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland will be reburied is the first official acknowledgement that the killings took place. But families of victims should not be in a hurry – the killings were a crime against humanity, Mnangagwa was involved in the planning of the Gukurahundi, and evidence must be preserved.

OP-ED: How do we understand democracy and human freedom?OP-ED: How do we understand democracy and human freedom? To comprehend the possibilities of freedom, it needs to be linked with an understanding of ‘human nature’ that is not static, that does not regard human beings as having fixed, innate, natural qualities, but as dynamic and capable of development in a range of ways. Just as freedom can be continually broadened and deepened, human beings can continue to grow and be much more than they may be at this moment in time.

Op-Ed: The time may have come for a trans-partisan government of national unityOp-Ed: The time may have come for a trans-partisan government of national unityPresident Nelson Mandela had the right idea in 1994 when he put together a Government of National Unity to pull South Africa back from the brink after decades of conflict. Perhaps this is an idea whose time has come, again, in 2019?

Op-Ed: The Incredible Whiteness of Being (the DA)Op-Ed: The Incredible Whiteness of Being (the DA)In three days’ time, thousands of voters are likely to ‘hold-their-noses-and-vote-Ramaphosa’ knowing full well that one votes for a party and not an individual, fully cognisant that their vote will contribute to large numbers of murderous, corrupt and inept ANC politicians making it into Parliament as a result. Yet they will do it anyway. Not because they do not know that the DA exists, or what its policies are, or even its track record in the municipalities it governs. It is simply that they do not trust the DA.

Op-Ed: Better the devil you know: Why I will vote for the ANCOp-Ed: Better the devil you know: Why I will vote for the ANCThere is only one party that can save South Africa from the mess of the Zuma years, and that is the ANC. The DA is still a party of mainly white men, and the EFF has too many skeletons lurking in its closet to be taken seriously. That’s why I am voting ANC.
