Doug Ford government wants new gas plants to boost Ontario's electricity system
is a phase-out of fossil-fuel-powered electricity that could include shutting down new facilities built after 2025.
Ontario's electricity supply is currently about 90 per cent free of CO2 emissions. Although the federal government wants electricity systems across Canada to be carbon neutral by 2035, the agency that manages Ontario's grid says it can't foresee phasing out gas-fired generation until 2050. "We're on the brink of a very large increase in our electricity system in Ontario," he said. "We've got to move ahead with these procurements now. We can't wait until 2024, or we'll be out of time."
