A rural Southwestern Ontario township’s five-person council has approved a motion to ban non-government flags on any municipal property
In a separate decision, council also rejected a call to declare June as Pride month. That vote, near the end of the three-hour meeting, caused Tami Murray, the head of Oxford County’s Pride organization, to storm out of council chambers,“It’s disgusting. I’m very disappointed for the 2SLGBTQ community,” said Murray. “It sets us back. It’s regression,”
“It’s very disheartening to see the way that they voted,” Norwich resident Tyler Zacher-King, who spoke at the meeting,Advertisement 4Mayor Palmer said he supported the ban on non-government flags as it reflected the opinion of his constituents. The community of about 11,000 people was also in the news last summer after the repeated theft and vandalism of local Pride flags.
