Ontario Tory insiders worry as byelections called in Toronto and Ottawa: ‘Liberals are stronger there than we thought’
Voters in two ridings in Toronto and Ottawa are headed to the polls for provincial byelections on July 27.
“I think we should have waited — the NDP has momentum after Chow,” said the second PC insider, noting Chow won 30.5 per cent of the vote in Scarborough-Guildwood while Liberal mayoral runner-up Ana Bailão took 28.4 per cent. Crawford, in his fourth term at city hall after seven years as a school trustee, said he will continue on council for the campaign.
In Kanata-Carleton, the Tory candidate is Sean Webster, formerly with cannabis company Canopy Growth, Shoppers Drug Mart and a lobbyist who has been active in the party for four decades. Hunter, first elected in 2013, won Scarborough-Guildwood in last June’s general election with 46 per cent of the vote to 31.5 per cent for the PCs, 16.7 per cent for the NDP and 2.8 per cent for the Greens.
