Although changes to the speed limit on Highway 417 will make it faster to get to the national capital — or perhaps away from it.
The name “Ottawa” appears just nine times in the 174 page document, with the most significant being a mention of support for the new Ottawa Hospital campus near Dow’s Lake, which is included in the $40 billion the province intends to spend on hospital infrastructure over the next decade. The Ottawa Hospital’s Stem Cell Program Project getting 12 new inpatient beds also warrants a mention in the infrastructure spending.
While the expansion and improvements to the GO Transit network around Toronto got 15 mentions, including the elimination of double fares for commuters transferring to other systems, and the TTC got a nod for its 40-station Ontario Line connecting Exhibition Place and the Ontario Science Centre, OC Transpo and the the Ottawa’s LRT system got… nada. That may because of the pending release of the provincial inquiry into problems with the construction and operation of the Confederation Line.
The financial statement did reference Ottawa in its $14-billion investment in schools and daycare spaces, including new elementary schools in Ottawa, Gloucester and a new English language high school in Stittsville. Premier Doug Ford visited the city just once during last June’s provincial election while Ford and his solicitor general, Sylvia Jones, have both taken a pass on testifying at the federal inquiry into the use of the Emergency Act during last winter’s convoy occupation of Ottawa, citing parliamentary privilege.
